The Italian Club in Liverpool won the category of Best Café/Bar which was looking for outstanding innovation and consistently high standards within the sector. A number of mystery shoppers visited Bar 44 and found the food and drinks served to be of a consistently high standard on each visit.
Bar 44 was praised for being one of the few bars outside a city centre to have such attention to detail and superb food.

In brief:
”Tasty tapas in trendy trattoria for the Cowbridge clique"
"Smoked anchovies were a hit, chorizo selection would have been at home on a Madrid summer's evening, garlic prawns were plump and beautifully seasoned, and bread was spot on. But the highlight is definitely the cheese selection. Apparently they get these Spanish wonders from a London supplier and they are stunning, especially the rosemary-seasoned ewe number."
"PERFECT PLACE FOR AN AFTERNOON CUPPA - Watch the rich people from your bay window over Cowbridge High Street whilst twizzling your chocolate stick. Great coffee, great sofas"

“One floor up from the high street (in Cowbridge) hides this wine and cocktail bar whose young owners offer a mainly local congregation superb tapas to soak up their drinks. The artistically presented menu has authentic dishes that create exactly the right atmosphere of culinary intimacy, while the food prep, always visible and often audible, continues unabashed in the corner. Favourite dishes include the sardines, green beans and patatas bravas, and the thorough wine list offers good house choices. Cheerful service too!

Unlike anywhere I have seen outside London. Wicked place to chill, eat tapas and sip cocktails. Very relaxed atmosphere, where you can drink coffee, beers, wine, champers or cocktails with tapas. Quality of food outclasses any tapas in Cardiff. A contemporary but warm feel inside, overlooking the high street.
Roz from Penarth
Really good food (try the dates wraped in bacon and the prawns cooked in garlic) and a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit.

Very relaxed atmosphere. Food was superb - black pudding wrapped in bacon was tremendous. San Miguel was ice cold and just like drinking it in Spain. Will definitely visit again.

Fantastic place! The food is excellent, especially the goat's cheese they now do. Atmosphere is relaxed and informal, service is good and the people are friendly! Love Bar 44 and go as often as I can - would recommend it to anyone!
Steve Dimmick
Nice place. Informal and friendly. We had a couple of rounds of drinks about 8 or 9 tapas and a slice of cake each for desert between 4 of us for about £60 - bargain! Worth the trek from Canton.
Sue Barbour from the Vale of Glamorgan
Bar 44 - what can I say - great atmosphere a fantastic selection of cocktails (not all sampled as yet!) Staff are friendly A great well done to the owners for their vision - Tapas food excellent but could be a little larger for the price. Great Venue and good entertainment when Daniel James has been there. Keep going
Buzz Magazine, Dec 2006
“…the sharp-lined modern décor puts, well, everywhere else you know to shame. £20 per head will get you a generous tapas selection and a couple of glasses of wine, and with freshly-made lemon sole goujons, lamb meatballs stuffed with mozzarella, and manchego cheese gratin at your finger-tips, you’ll know you’ve come to the right place.”
WM Polo Magazine, 2004
“ Bar 44 offers more than your average evening hang-out – part coffee shop, part cocktail bar, part tapas restaurant; you’ll find something for everyone here. The bar opens at 10am for coffees, with the kitchen opening at 12. A tremendous range of different cocktails are all mixed with fresh ingredients on site.”
